If you live in Guatemala City and want the beach without planning a week-long trip, Puerto San José remains one of the most practical options: calm seas, volcanic sand, and a well-maintained highway that makes the trip short.
How to get there
From Guatemala City, the route is via the Palín–Escuintla highway, the CA-9 South, and the highway to Puerto Quetzal. The trip takes between 1 hour 30 minutes and 2 hours depending on traffic; it is best to avoid leaving on a Friday afternoon on a long weekend.

An extra detail: the house is about 25 minutes by car from El Paredón, so if anyone in the group wants to surf or enjoy the livelier atmosphere of that beach on any day of the trip, it is close by without having to stay overnight there.
What to do in the area
Nearby there are water parks like Aqua Magic, an ostrich farm, and, in season, turtle release programs, a memorable activity with children. You can also walk around the area of the old dock and the historic railway station.
